Hi everybody. My name is Justin Stoney and I'm the founder of New York Vocal Coaching here in New York City.
Welcome to Episode 26 of Voice Lessons To The World. The show where we want to help you guys as singers by answering your questions from all over.
And I'll give you a chance to ask questions later. But our question for this week comes from Randall O. in Orlando Florida.
And Randall writes, "Dear Justin, I have the 'baritone curse'. All my favorite singers are tenors that sing pop rock and R&B;. But I'm a baritone. Am I doomed with the 'baritone curse', or will I ever be able to sing high?"
That's a great question Randall and thank you so much for writing. And that's very funny, the "baritone curse." I like, I like the way you say that.
And today we're going to talk about this curse that you described and see if we can dispel some of that and give you some ideas and some options so that you don't feel doomed and cursed for the rest of your life.
So let's dive right in. "The baritone curse". I think I know what you mean by that Randall, but I'm going I'm going to just talk us through that.
First of all, a baritone... A lot of people think that's somebody, you know with a low voice, and... and it could be. It is. However, just know Randall and all... I haven't heard you Randall, but a low speaking voice does not necessarily mean that you're a baritone.
So if you have a low voice, if you have a low, baritone speaking voice... That doesn't mean that you're a baritone. There's plenty of guys with a low speaking voice, who are actually tenors, and actually have a great high range.
And there's also baritones and bases that don't actually speak all that low. A lot of times it does cross over. But not necessarily. So you may indeed have a low speaking voice, and not be a baritone. That's one thing to keep in mind.
Another thing is a lot of people have been told that they’re baritones. Maybe you've sung in choir in the past and you were put in the baritone section. And that could have been due to blend.
But then you start to think to yourself, "Well, I'm a baritone." And you identify with that. You identify with low notes, and with singing low, and you think of your voice as low.
Voice teachers as well often classified their singers as baritones, and have them singing low repertoire, and singing low and middle notes all the time. Just because somebody has told you you're a baritone in the past, doesn't necessarily mean that you are.
Personally, growing up I always sang baritone in choir, I was trained as a singer as a baritone, and I found out later that I was actually a tenor, and had a real easy time getting up to high notes. But all growing up and all through my teenage years and even early twenties, I really didn't have a tenor range. But I found out later that I was a tenor.
So just because people have told you that you’re a baritone, that also doesn't mean that you're "cursed" to be a baritone.
The next thing is, just because you have trouble with high notes, doesn't mean you're a baritone.
Lot of people say, "Well I just can't hit those high notes. I must be a baritone." Even voice teachers will say, "Well, you're not really getting up to these notes and just kind of strained up here. I bet you're a baritone."
Just keep in mind that a struggle with high notes doesn't just mean that you're a baritone. It's probably some sort of issue with your registration, or an issue with your vocal mechanics. It is something that can be changed. And so struggle with high notes does not equal baritone.
Next, Opera vs Contemporary Music.
Keep in mind, there's a lot of different voice types that classical singers classify. You could be a lyric baritone. You could be a basso profundo, you could be a dramatic tenor, or a lyric tenor... There's a lot of categories that really do matter for operatic music. When you're on an operatic stage and you need to project over an orchestra, your voice type actually has a lot of meaning.
But in contemporary music and pop and especially microphone singing, those distinctions are really not important. It sounds like, Randall, you want to sing more pop, rock, and R&B;.
So perhaps you've had some classical training, and maybe in a classical setting you might be a baritone. But somebody who's a baritone on the operatic stage could indeed sing high in a pop setting.
There's a lot of reasons why that's true but just know that a classical singer's distinction, is not necessarily going to be something that crosses over to contemporary and microphone singing.
Also, baritones sometimes are just guys who have used their chest voice exclusively. They only know how to sing in chest. Or maybe just falsetto and chest voice. But they haven't developed a lot of different registers. They just sing one way all the time. And that way tends to be chest voice.
Doesn't matter if you're a tenor or baritone, if you're only singing in chest voice, you're going to be something like a baritone, no matter what your voice type is. So those are the categories that I'm going to call, "elements to having the baritone curse."
So I hope that makes sense for you, Randall, and maybe you can identify with some of those, and baritones out there, maybe you can identify with some of those.
But now let's talk about breaking the "curse". If you are "cursed," as a baritone, here are some ideas for how you can maybe get through that.
First of all, like I say, within pop music everybody's a tenor. Ok. So, again, voice types are real. What you've got, is what you've gotten. But, within pop music everybody can make sounds that are something like what a tenor would make.
An authentic, high, chesty sounding note, that can be done regardless of voice range. I know very, very low basses and baritones who naturally would be basses and baritones, especially in a classical setting, who can sing with a really high extension that works great for pop rock, even for musical theater as well.
The key to this though is going to be developing a good mix. And you might need a good voice teacher in your area, to help you to do this. But developing a mix, is finding a registration that's between chest voice and your falsetto or head voice.
There are ways to blend those two things, that will take the weight out of your strong chest voice, and allow you to extend your range higher and higher in a healthy way, and in a way that sounds, like I say, strong.
It's not chest voice. But it will sound like chest voice. So even the lowest singers when they develop a great mix, and a great head voice, will be able to sing like a tenor, really really high, especially within the context of contemporary music.
Now, another tip for breaking that "curse,” I've said this in the past. Don't neglect your falsetto. Don't neglect your head voice.
It's not probably the mix you're looking for, Randall, but you can't neglect the high stuff and expect to get the mix.
You got to get way up there in falsetto. You've got to do your trills. You've got to do your breath support exercises. You have to do your things like we've talked about with filters in the past.
Things that facilitate your flexibility, you've got to have a lot of that kind of work, not just strength work, if you want to get up into the mix, and if you want to be something like a tenor, or you want to discover that you really, really are a tenor, and have been a tenor all along.
Another thing is, don't sing your middle voice too loudly, or to fully. If you're pushing your chest voice through your middle, if you're getting too loud, if you're getting too strong, if you're getting too chesty right through your middle and upper-middle voice, you're probably not going to have the high notes.
Your voice is getting too strong, right there in the middle, and it won't be able to hang on to all that weight. And it's going to block you from being whatever tenor you have wanted to be.
Next, is make sure that you use nasal resonance. Some, "humm," in your sound going through that middle and upper-middle voice.
If you wait until you get to your high notes to use your upper resonators, you're never going to get to the high notes. You need to bring those down into your middle, too - that's one tip I can give you right now about how to get that mix to go higher, and how to access those high notes - don't neglect that nasal resonance.
And then, also, baritones are used to singing, and speaking, like I say, pretty full, and pretty thick. But one of the vocal cord coordination that is going to be necessary for you to get up into the tenor range, is allowing your voice to be a little bit more, "wussy," and sometimes a little bit more breathy. You need to have these coordinations, too. The opposite of "baritone land," is something like this.
And while you won't sing that way all the time, if you aren’t experimenting as a pop singer with some of the lighter and breathier sounds, you're not also going to be able to have an easier time up in those tenor notes. So allow for wussiness, allow for breathyness, as one of your coordinations.
Next, I just want to say this, Randall, and all who suffer from a baritone curse, being a baritone is not so bad. I mean, come on, the world needs more baritones, right?
Everybody's singing high these days. So, Randall, I know you want to be a tenor. And probably so many guys out there watching this, you want to be a tenor.
But maybe being a baritone is not such a bad thing after all. You can cultivate your low register, your middle register... You can have a strong, chest voice in a nice rich baritone sound... That might not be the worst thing.
If you have a glorious baritone voice and it's a true baritone voice... it doesn't love to get up to the high notes... You might just be better off honestly, not being afraid of who you are and cultivating that sound, something a little bit lower than we're used to hearing.
When everybody's doing it one way, it's okay to do it another way. You might be better off not trying to just hit high notes all the time. Everybody's singing high notes. Not everybody has to just be singing high notes all day.
Honestly, it gets a little tiring for the ear in pop music these days. Don't ya think? When everybody's just belting high all the time, it'd be nice actually to have a few more true baritones out there in the pop, rock, R&B; world, singing a little bit more mellow, a little bit more rich and deep. It's not such a bad thing.
So listen, if you want high notes, there's definitely ways to get it. If you want to be a tenor in pop rock music, know that it's not just something that's impossible. You can absolutely do it. But also, don't be afraid to be a baritone. It's not such a bad thing.
So, whether you decide to break the curse, or not, it's up to you. But know it can be broken. But also know, it's not so bad to be a baritone.

Hi everybody. My name is Justin Stoney and I'm the founder of New York Vocal Coaching here in New York City. Welcome to Episode 25 of Voice Lessons to the World, the show where we want to help you guys as singers by answering your questions from all over.
And I'll give you a chance to ask questions later. But a question for this week comes from Kira S. in Sydney, Australia. And Kira says, "Dear Justin, I'm a guitarist and I also enjoy singing along to songs that I play. But most of the music I like are by men or boy bands. So when I sing these songs I either can't match the pitch, or, when I can, the high notes don't sound right. How can I sing the songs I like in a way that my voice is able to handle?"
And that's a great question, Kira. And I really appreciate you asking it, because so many singers are getting lost just by a simple fact of not knowing what key, to put the song. And so that's what we're gonna talk about today, is knowing that, and having wisdom about the key that you're singing.
So the first thing that you're going to need to know is what is your range. You need to identify your vocal range. You need to know where the low notes lie. You need to know where the upper notes in your range lie.
And maybe you could figure that out on your own. Especially if you're a guitarist or an instrumentalist. But it's really important that you know the exact notes. You can also get a coach to help you with this.
But you need to identify not just that. Not just the low and the high, but then also where your chest voice lies, where your head voice lies, and where your mix is.
All of these things will change over time. They'll improve as you work. But you need to know right now, where these parts of your voice are, so that you can kind of determine where you're going to place those keys.
And then not being afraid to change the key. We're going to talk all about that today. So know your range, know where your different registers lie, and then we're going to have you change the key to fit where that's at.
But next I want to talk here about what you said about the differences between guys and girls. You're singing these male songs, and a lot of females want to sing male songs, and male song male people want to sing female songs. And that's great! But you have to understand that there's differences in the voices.
The voice works the same pretty much for males and females, or very similarly, at least. But where the exciting notes lie is very different. In other words, if a female were to just sing a song in a male key, it probably wouldn't be all that exciting. It would probably be actually kind of a little bit strange. You need to alter it.
So where a male has his sort of exciting notes, especially in like contemporary music and with like a belt, would be F4 through C5. Guys that can sing up there, that's very exciting.
But women singing in that territory it's pretty common. For a female the exciting money notes would be, a Bb4 through an F5. So that shifted up about a perfect fourth.
Wikipedia "Money Note" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Money_note
So that doesn't mean you always want to sing in those territories per se. But you need to know where your voice lies, where your "money" notes are, so that you can put the key into that place.
Also I should just mention that, that, guys, we tend to prize guys that can do lighter higher coordinations... Guys singing with a lot of chest voice, so when a guy goes up into a high head voice, it's very thrilling.
But when a female sings in a lighter, headier tone, we tend to not think that's as exciting. We tend to think when they're in their chest voice, that's what's more exciting.
So there's that difference too, is that you know a male singing high and light is impressive, and a female singing low and powerfully is impressive. That's just something to keep in mind too, when you're deciding what key to do.
Next I want to just talk about what you said, Kira, about singing along with artists.
It's not such a bad thing to, you know, throw on the stereo and sing along to artists. There's some advantages. You can learn style, but it's actually probably, mostly, something that's going to limit you over time.
You might strain because the notes are too high, it might not be the right key for you, you might try to manipulate your voice to try to sound like that artist.
There's a lot of reasons why singing along with artists is not really the best thing. But since we're talking about keys today, that's one of them.
You may very well be seeing a horrible key when you're singing along with the artist. So that's why you really have to get your keys changed to suit your range, to suit your registers, and to suit what is exciting and is comfortable in your voice.
You want your keys to be kind of a moderate challenge. Not too high and strained not too low and boring something that's a little bit difficult for you, but a challenge that you can overcome.
So how do you do it? First of all, Kira, if you're a guitarist, you've got a capo. You can just shift the keys with a capo. That's very handy for anybody that's a guitarist.
If it's an instrumentalist, you might print out the key. There's tons of resources these days. There's websites that will help you print songs in any different key. That's very handy.
There's transposers that can transpose music for you. There's coaches that can help you find the right key and also transpose that music. But in this day and age, it's so easy. There's so many resources for finding the right key.
So there's absolutely no reason to just sing the key that the original artist did. That's putting you at a very big disadvantage.
So I hope that's helpful for you guys today as singers. I don't want you guys to be discouraged because you can't sing the exact key that you heard. Go ahead and change it.
It's the easiest thing in the world, and it will make such a big difference if you have some wisdom about what you're doing with the keys, so that you're not just straining and unable to accomplish your vocal goals.

Hi everybody! My name is Justin Stoney and I’m the founder of New York Vocal Coaching here in New York City. Welcome to episode 24 of Voice Lessons To The World, the show we want to help you guys as singers by answering your questions from all over the world.
And I’ll give you a chance to ask questions later, but our question for this week comes from Hara K. in Seoul, Korea. And Hara writes, “Dear Justin, I’m doing diaphragm breathing, I think. But it doesn’t seem to be making any difference. What do I do after I inhale? Do I just leave my stomach area expanded? Breathing doesn’t seem to be helping me.”
Now Hara, thank you very much for your honesty in that question because I think so many singers out there feel the same way as you. They’ve been told something about their breathing, they’re working on their singing, they’re working hard, they’re working on their breath, but they don’t seem to be getting any results. And they think, I think kind of how you think, that “Well, the problem must be with me. I must not be doing it right.”
And we are gonna talk today about your specific question about what to do after I inhale, but I wanna start by just talking about breathing in general.
Breathing is something that singers lose the forest for the trees about. It’s just one component of your singing. But a lot of singers and a lot of voice teachers too, start to think “Well, singing is all about the breath.”
And that sounds logical. But we know that just working on breathing and thinking about breathing all the time doesn’t seems to get the results.
And the reason why is because it’s very rarely actually the problem. It’s one component, but it’s just one. We’ve got many other things. You’ve got vocal cords themselves, you’ve got registration, you’ve got the larynx, you’ve got resonance, you’ve got all kinds of looseness that you’re gonna need with jaw and tongue.
There’s so many other components that are usually much more important than breathing itself. But people put breathing on the pedestal, they work on it constantly, and they don’t seem to be getting any better.
So, Hara and all, just know that breath is not always the solution. In fact, like I say, It’s, I’d say, rarely the solution when you think about how many other components there are to singing.
So don’t get lost in breathing. And if you think that your sound is going off-track, don’t think that it might be because your breathing is wrong.
But then, let’s talk about your question. What do I do after I inhale?
Now remember, there’s not just one breathing system. There’s some that I would find more advantageous than others, but a lot of singers breath in different ways. So I’m gonna talk you through a few of the different breathing systems that people use, and what you would do after you inhale.
So the first would be abdominal breathing where you open up the belly. Now again, this is the one that I do recommend.
So, if you open your belly when you inhale, then what do you do after? Well, pretty much for breath support, we’re trying to maintain what we created.
So, if I open my belly, and I have a long phrase, let’s just say meh meh meh, I would do “Meh meh meh…” I’m trying to keep my belly pretty much open the whole time. Now the low abs do come in gently as I do that, but only gently. I don’t wanna be bringing my belly in quickly. I wanna be maintaining what it is that I created. That is breath support.
But again, my low abs do come in slowly and gently as I sing. That would be your abdominal breath. Again I do recommend it.
Another that I recommend in combination or exclusively with ab breathing is a rib breath where the ribs expand open to the sides and a bit up as you inhale.
Now with this breath I want to again maintain what I created. If I feel that expansion, I don’t wanna just collapse it. I wanna keep it pretty much open. So I have a long phrase, “Meh meh meh…” I feel ‘em coming down a little bit, but I’m not dropping them down. So again, I’m maintaining what I created.
Now again I don’t recommend this breath but there are some singers that do breath up here in the chest.
If you are chest breather and that’s been working for you and you don’t wanna change it, that’s fine. But here’s what you need to do if your breath is up here.
Same exact thing, you don’t want to drop down. You don’t wanna slam the air out, you wanna, “Meh meh meh…”, keep it up and only move down slowly.
Again I don’t really recommend that breath but for those who do, just know you can’t be heaving your chest when you’re breathing.
So those are the key points for what to do after you inhale, but just one big, big point. Here’s the thing to never do when you are… after you inhale when you’re exhaling. Squeeze the abs.
The upper abs need to be loose at all times. Doesn’t matter whether you’re doing a rib breath, or a belly breath, or even a chest breath. If you’ve got your upper abs squeezed during your breathing, that is gonna cause big problems.
So just make sure that this region, no matter what you do, stays totally loose while you sing.
Then just one more point, Hara, is support vs. rigidity. We just talk about how breathing, your exhale needs to be really supported, which means maintain what you created.
So a lot of people get lost in this because they’re trying so hard to maintain whatever opening it is that they opened. And then they get tight.
So we need to keep the body loose, we need to keep the body kind of, in a sense of motion. You need to be able to have hips free, knees not locked knees free, your shoulders, your neck… Everything needs to feel like it could be in motion.
You don’t wanna feel that your body’s being held when you’re holding something open for support. So that’s a really really key point.
So, breath support, although you’re holding it, you’re also gonna have a slow release and a fluid motion in your body. Don’t let your breath support become a form of rigidity.
So, Hara, I hope that answers your question. And I hope that’s been helpful for you today as singers.
Just keep working on your breathing but don’t get lost in it. Know that there’s a huge world of voice and that’s just one component.
But I really hope that our talk today can help you know a little bit more about that one component and if that is indeed, Hara, the thing that’s interfering with your singing that’s great and I hope that this could help you to get to the next step with it.
If there’s a question that you guys wanna see us answer on the show, you can send an e-mail to Questions@VoiceLessonsToTheWorld.com.
We just encourage you not to lose that joy. Don’t lose that passion. Keep working on your singing, keep working on your breathing, but keep working on all components of your voice.

Hi everybody. My name is Justin Stoney and I'm the founder of New York Vocal Coaching here in New York City. Welcome to Episode 23 of Voice Lessons to the World, the show where we want to help you guys the singers by answering your questions from all over the world.
And I'll give you a chance to ask questions later, but our question for this week comes from Daniel S. from Queensland, Australia. And if you remember last week, Daniel was asking about how Adele moves quickly from register to register.
She moves from head voice to chest voice very fast and she has that very unique ability to do that. And I promised you guys that I would give you an exercise this week that can help you to move back and forth quickly between registers.
But before I do that, let's just talk on in another sense about what Adele is doing with that quick alternation. And it's essentially a yodel.
If you guys don't know what yodeling is it's that sound, it's like a Bavarian Alps call to sheep. It's the sort of, "yodel-leh-hee-who, yoel-leh-hee-who..."
Ok, now it's kind of silly and ridiculous, but that's what a yodel is. And even though we don't really do any yodeling these days so often, you hear what is truly a yodel in pop music, going from head, from chest to head voice really really fast.
So we're going to do a yodel exercise today and we're going to also see what the benefits of yodeling are for your voice and it will help you to do some stuff like Adele is doing.
So we're going to dive right into the exercise. Take a listen to this. I'm gonna' do it on an "i". (sounds, E - E - E - E - E) I'm going back and forth between chest and my falsetto. Now ladies will be up here. "i - i - i - i - i.." Ok?
So we're going to do this together and see if you can go from chest to head or chest to falsetto, back and forth with this exercise. Here we go. [Exercise]
Great job! So it's tricky and it's kinda weird. But, that is moving from chest to head voice really quick.
Now we're actually going to speed it up, and we're gonna try an "u" (oo) vowel. This might be tough for some. But I want you to go a little bit faster so that you get that "yodel-y" quality and you get to move as quickly as Adele is in a lot of her songs.
So we'll do, "u - u - u - u - u - u - u..." Ready? Here we go. [Exercise]
Great stuff! So that's a yodel exercise.
Again it's kind of weird. It's kind of goofy. But think about it. Isn't it actually kind of weird how Adele goes so fast up to head voice like that? I mean it sounds awesome. But it actually really is a crack of the voice, it's kind of a yodel-y sound, it's just that when Adele does it in the context of her great songs, it sounds totally awesome. But really, it's yodeling.
And so if we have an exercise like that we can we can do a lot of things. Let me just talk about the the benefits of doing something like that.
First of all, like I said, you get to do the cool tricks that Adele does in her songs.
But also, the vocal cords naturally want to stretch out and lengthen and separate like that. So it's really good for your voice to do that. It's allowing the cords to do their natural function. They just want to have that kind of flexibility. They want to crack as you go higher. So by allowing that you're really building in some flexibility to your voice.
Now flexibility will also lead to better agility. And so you'll find that by doing this you'll be able to move faster, your riffs will get better, you'll just be able to actually probably sing higher notes, period, due to greater flexibility. And it can also improve your vibrato.
So there's tons of reasons why allowing the voice to do that, to crack and to go back and forth like that, is actually a really healthy thing and is a skill builder as well.
And then finally another benefit to yodeling is attracting sheep. I'm sure that if you do this exercise enough there's going to be hordes of sheep coming to your door and if you if you do it well you're going to increase your flocks, and you're going to have an abundance of sheep as well.
So, obviously that's just a joke. But, I do think that yodeling is going to be something that can really help you, as strange as it may be, to develop some of these coordinations in your voice.
So Daniel and all, I hope that's been helpful for you guys today. If you have questions that you'd like to see us answer on the show you can send an email to: Questions@VoiceLessonsToTheWorld.com.
So we just encourage you to not lose that joy, don't lose that passion. Don't be afraid to experiment with weird and goofy things like yodeling. I just know that if you work on something like that, it's going to give you some new coordinations in your voice that you never thought were possible.
