Hi everybody. My name is Justin Stoney and I'm the founder of New York Vocal Coaching here in New York City.

Welcome to episode 51 of Voice Lessons To The World, the show where we want to help you guys as singers by answering your questions from all over.

And I'll give you a chance to ask questions later, but our question for this week comes from Nicole W. in Sydney, Australia.

And Nicole writes, "Dear Justin, I'd love for you to do an episode on diphthongs. I have diphthongs when I sing and it's really causing my voice to be twangy."

Well, Nicole, we would love to do an episode on diphthongs as well. And so that's what we're gonna do here today.

But I know what you guys are thinking... ”Wait a minute, Justin. Diphthongs? I thought this was a family show, I don't know where this is headed, diphthongs?”  But I promise you it's not what you think, okay?

So what is a diphthong? Diphthong, this comes from the Greek word. “Thong" means vowel, alright? And "dip" means two. So that's two vowels, diphthong - two vowel sounds within one vowel.

So an example of this would be, say, an "a" vowel. A. Right? A-ee. That's two vowels in one vowel. Or I. Ah-ee. That's a diphthong.

Now we also do have a monophthong. That would be like an "e" vowel. Ee. Right? One vowel sound, monophthong. Or, ah. Aaah. That's just one vowel.

Then, of course, we move to diphthongs. Ah-ee. We get two for one.

There's also even something called a triphthong although this is a little bit more uncommon. If you have like a cockney accent, you might have an Oh governor. Oh. A-ah-oo. Oh governor. Right, so you hear three vowel sounds within one vowel.

But today we're going to be talking about diphthongs. Because diphthongs are so commonly talked about by singing teachers and by singers.

Let's try to find out together why diphthongs could be a problem, okay. When you're trying to hold a long-phrase or a long note I should say, and you are singing on a diphthong, you're actually changing the resonance quite severely when you move from vowel to vowel.

As we change vowels, the resonance in our head changes quite a lot. And that's going to make sometimes a quite a big interference in the note that we're trying to do if we go too quickly to the second vowel in the diphthong. I'm going to show you what I mean by this.

But first, notice how much difference there is in either my tongue or my lips when I move from vowel to vowel. Ah-ee-ah-ee, or aa-oo-aa-oo. My tongue or my lips move drastically as I'm changing vowel.

If I'm trying to hold a long note or have a long legato phrase, the change in vowel could really interfere with my note or with my legato line. And that's why voice teachers so often harp so much on diphthongs so that line and so that sustain doesn't get interrupted by the second thong, okay.

Now, let me show you what I mean by this in a song called, "On The Street Where You Live" from the musical “My Fair Lady.”

Now here's without letting the diphthongs interfere...

“People stop and stare, they don’t bother me

For there’s nowhere else on earth that I would rather be

Let the time go by, I won’t care if I…”

Okay, I didn't let it interfere. But now if I do... “Let the time go by, I won’t care…” The shift from ah to ee was a problem.

“Let the time go by I won’t” And that really shifts my note as I'm trying to hold... “Let the time go by I won't care if I” And that is not interfered with by the second vowel.

So that's really what we're trying to do is not let the second thong interfere with the first. We're trying to stay on the first vowel in a diphthong pair as long as humanly possible and then cut it off with the second.

But now you probably say, “Justin, aren't there times in songs where we do want to go to the diphthong?” And, absolutely.

We don't want to say that this is bad but we always want to make things a choice when we sing. Now there are styles that you really need to have diphthongs.

For example, if you're going to have a country accent, you're gonna be doing some country or some bluegrass, a lot of the sounds are going to have a diphthong. Like the word "day", right? Day. That has a second vowel sound on purpose. Day-ee. Right?

So if I have "Man Of Constant Sorrow" by the Soggy Bottom Boys...

“I am a man of constant sorrow

I've seen trouble all my day-ees”

I need to go “Day-ees” or else I'm gonna go “Days”. And that’s not gonna sound right.

I’ve seen trouble all my day-ees” I need to have a diphthong in that instance.

Now another example would be extreme examples in songs where it's purposeful to go to the diphthong. An example would be "Out Tonight" from “Rent”. We've got this phrase here...

“I want to go ou-oot tonight

I have to go ou-oot tonight”

Now if I did... “Ou-wt tonight” That wouldn't be the song. It's purposely, “Ou-oot tonight”. And so sometimes in pop songs or musical theater, a lot of styles have songs that specifically go to that second thong on purpose.

So we want to be aware that that is common and know that that's a choice in some instances. So we want to be able to go back and forth.

Now I'm going to give you a little exercise here where we practice together on four of the most major diphthongs. And we're going to do each one in a row.

This is not a hard exercise we're not even going to go high. I just want to give you guys a chance to try the most common diphthong vowels and hold the first thong and then cut it off with the second.

So we're going to do just on one note... May May May, My My My, Mo Mo Mo and Mow Mow Mow. Okay, these are the four big ones.

Alright, I'll show you what we're gonna do. We're gonna hold and then we're gonna cut off like this... “May May May” and then, “My My My” and then,  “Mo Mo Mo” and finally... “Mow Mow Mow” Right?

So you get practice with holding the front part of the vowel. So here we go together with “May May May”.

(Exercise)

Excellent, excellent stuff.

So Nicole and all, you can see now a little bit more information on diphthongs and how you can control them so that they don't interfere with your legato line so that you can hold that front part of the thong and cut it off at the very, very end with the second thong.

Or if it's part of your style or it's an intentional part of the song you can go ahead and honor that second thong as a part of your music.

But today I thought, actually, it would be hopefully helpful to actually share the story cause it’s a very, very cool story about how I became a voice teacher that I hope can help.

So, I always said “I will never be a voice teacher! That’s the last thing I would ever want to do.” And sure enough, a sort of miraculous story happened. And I want to share that story with you.

I was… I came to New York to be a singer. And I was here for only about two weeks. I was just fresh off the boat.

And I went to an audition. And, again only two weeks into the city. And I was in the waiting room when this man walks into the room.

And he says to everybody in the waiting room, “Does anybody in here play the piano?”  And I kind of sheepishly raise my hand. And he says, “You, come out here in the hall.” So I go out.

And he says, “How well do you play the piano?” And I say, “You know, pretty well.” He says, “Do you think you can sightread and play well enough to play an audition?” And I say, “Yeah, I think I probably could.”

So he gets on a cell phone and he says, “Yeah, I got some kid here. Yeah, he thinks he can do it. Okay, We’ll take the kid.”

So, he says ”Finish up your audition. Come down the hall. We want you to play these auditions.” I go into the waiting room.

And the monitor says to me, “Now, you know who that is, right?” I say, “No. I don’t know who that is.” He says, “That’s one of the most influential casting directors of all time. He has cast films, TV shows, Broadway shows.” He says, “You better get ready.”

So I was starting to get nervous. And I finish up my audition. And then I go down the hall to play for this big audition. And my jaw was on the floor.

And I’ve never been so nervous in my entire life. Because here I am, two weeks into the city, and I’m playing for big stars as they walk through the door for this audition. I just couldn’t believe that I was playing for a bunch of people that I knew.

And somehow I survived this. And somehow I had the audacity at the end of it to say to the casting director, I said, “Don’t pay me.” I said, “Take two headshots and call me when I’m right for something.” And he said, “Okay, alright.” So he takes the pictures.

But he says, “You know, Justin. We saw something in you. We think that you have what it takes to be a really great vocal coach. We saw your work, we saw how you interacted with the singers. We just sensed that you could be a great vocal coach.”

And I thought, “A vocal coach… that’s the last thing I would want to do.” But because this guy saw this in me, somebody that knew what he was doing could see that potential in me. I... that day... went from pursuing my dreams to walking into my destiny. I found out what I was meant to do, what I was called to do in this life in a sort of miraculous way.

And that’s why they say that things happen in A New York Minute. Because one day you can be expecting things to be going one way, and then, “BAM!”, walk right into your destiny.

And so, I mean, that’s just a cool story. And the one that I’ll never forget. And it’s… you know, that’s why I’m doing what I’m doing today.

But it really taught me a few things.

One is that you can say “Never say never.” Right? I mean, I said I would never be a voice teacher, never be a vocal coach. And now this is what I live for. I live to help as many people around the world learn how to sing as I possibly can in the time that I’m given in this life. That’s my purpose in life. And I said I would never do it. So I guess you can say “Never say never.”

The next thing is, if you’re going after your dreams, you will definitely end up finding your destiny.

So many times it’s just so easy to just give up on what we have in our hearts. You just say, “Oh, that can never happen. You know, I don’t have what it takes. All these people told me No.” You know, that’s why we always say, “Don’t let people tell you you can’t sing.”

And it’s not just singing. Anything that you have in your heart, you have to go after it. It’s not that it needs to work out exactly how you wanted to work out. But if you’re going after your dreams, either it’s going to work out just how you thought, or you’re going to go smacking into your destiny that you never thought, that’s going to use your talents and gifts.

People are going to see - if you’re going after your dreams, if you’re bold enough to go after your dreams and tell people, “Take two headshots and call me when I’m right” - people are going to know that you have something. And they’re going to see the potential in you. And there’s no way you’re gonna miss out on your destiny.

The next thing it showed me is that things happen in A New York Minute. How many singers have I seen… and artists, just struggling, struggling, working so hard - they wanna give up, you know, they get discouraged, they get frustrated.

And then in my time as a voice teacher, I have seen people who just thought “I will never make it. This will never happen for me.” BOOM! Then it happens. They finally get that breakthrough. They finally get what is was they were after.

And it happens when you least expected, and it happens fast. It happens in A New York Munite. So you cannot give up on yourself and things that you have inside you.

So these are things, I guess, that my story in becoming a voice teacher has taught me. And so far our special episode 50 today, I just wanted to tell you guys about how I became a voice teacher and you know, again, we’re so grateful.

And we’re not going to stop. We’re going to just be with you guys and be helping you with this journey and we’re just thankful for every moment of it.

And so, don’t lose that joy. Don’t lose that passion. Don’t let people tell you you can’t sing because you and I both know it’s just not true.

And, here’s to 50 more!

Hi everybody! My name is Justin Stoney and I’m the founder of New York Vocal Coaching here in New York City.

Welcome to Ep. 49 of Voice Lessons To The World, the show where we wanna help you guys as singers by answering your questions from all over the world.

And I’ll give you a chance to ask questions later, but our question for this week comes from Anthony C. in West Haven, CT.

And Anthony writes, “Dear Justin, I would love to learn how to roll my R’s, but I can’t do it. Can you show me how to do it?”

Yes, Anthony. I think I can. And this is a great question because we do need to be able to roll our R’s and do tongue trills often when we sing and when we speak.

Now, most of you probably know what this is, but let’s talk about what is a tongue trill or a rolled R.

It’s where the front of your tongue comes up and meets your hard palate, or your alveolar ridge, you get a sort of “Rrr...” sound.

Now it’s not the back, “Chh...”. It’s the front, “Rrr...”, buzzing against your hard palate.

Now why do we even need this? For one thing we need this if we’re gonna be doing some classical repertoire that uses Italian or maybe Spanish or if we wanna speak those languages we need to “Rrr...” roll our R’s.

And also it makes for a great vocal exercise. So, those of you that already know how to do this, hang in there for the end because we’re gonna do an exercise together where you get a chance to work some tongue trills. They’re really great for the voice.

And then finally... Is there any sound that you guys really don’t wanna be able to make? We know that on this show we’re gonna cover every sound that there is out there over time. And we wanna be versatile with our voices. We wanna not have limitations. We don’t wanna have sounds that we can’t do.

So if you wanna be able to do a tongue trill, now’s your chance to be able to do it.

Now, some people think that they can’t do a tongue trill. And most of the time this is not true.

I will admit though there’s a genetic issue sometimes for people with tongue trill. There are some people that just will not be able to do the trill.

But here’s the two things that genetically speaking if you can do it you’re gonna be able to do the trill.

Here’s what they are. Number one, you need to be able to lift your tongue like this. In the front, it’s gotta lift up and touch the hard palate. That’s the first thing.

Second thing, though this is the one that’s harder for some people, is you have to be able to curl your tongue. The sides of the tongue have to be able to come up or else the trill won’t work.

So if you can curl your tongue in a sort of u-shape in the middle and the sides, and you can lift it, you will be able to do the trill.

Alright. Even if you can’t do now, we’re gonna work together right now to be able to do it.

So here are some steps for you guys to be able to do a tongue trill. Okay, first I’m gonna tell you a couple common ways that people have helped people get it in the past.

One is repeating words that kind of have the sound of it like say the word “Butter”. If we say “Butter, butter, butter...”, It kinda puts the tongue in that trill kinda place. Try that out. Say “Butter” a bunch of times. Here we go. That was nice. So you feel that “Butter...” right?

“Butter, butter, butter...”

Now another thing is to kinda use a Scottish accent. Just say it for me,  “Scotland is GRRREAT!” Okay? Try that out. That’s right. “Scotland is GRRREAT!” It was nice. Good, good job, Right?

So that “Grr, Grr, Grr” sound - that is gonna start the tongue trilling. So that’s kind of just few ways that people have talked about in the past.

What I like to do for you guys today is talk about how it’s not just the front of the tongue we need to address to get this trill right, but the whole tongue. I’m gonna show you what I mean.

So first of all, the front. Here’s what we have to do with the front. First of all, we need the jaw and mouth relaxed and then the tip is going to come up, not to meet the teeth. If you’re meeting the teeth, you’re too far forward for the trill.

We’re trying for the alveolar ridge, whoa, that is a part of the hard palate. It’s a little further back from the teeth. It’s not the gums, it’s not the teeth, it’s a little further back on the hard palate. That’s your alveolar ridge. That’s where the trill is going to take place. So that’s one thing you really have to know.

The other thing is that tip of the tongue has to be loose. If that tip is tight, you will never do the trill. That is what is flapping. So if you tighten that guy, it’s not gonna be able to flap.

So really when you’re trying these, “Rrr...” trills, you gotta keep the front, super relaxed and touching the right place.

Now that’s just the front, most people have trouble because they’re only thinking about the front when they’re doing the trill

But now we need to know the sides and then also the back. So here’s the sides. The sides, as I say, they have to be able to curl up. You have to curl your tongue on the sides to, first of all, meet the teeth. Let’s try touching the sides of the tongue to the teeth. Probably the molars. Right. Okay.

So you’re gonna meet the sides of the teeth. This is not how to do it, but the first step to doing it.

When you do the actual trill, it’s going to be inside the teeth. But first, meet the teeth with the sides of the tongue. That’s good.

Okay, So if you’ve got that, now just think about a few of these sounds that you may have heard. This is kind of a retroflex tongue, this "err" sound that we have a curl and a pull back of the tongue, "err".

You may have heard of this with the annoucer Tom Brokaw “NBC nightly news with Tom Brokaw”, that has that kind of curl to the sides.

Or Austin Powers Dr. Evil does the “I’m still hip. I’m still cool, taka, taka, taka...” that sort of “huh” of the sides of the tongue. You’ve gotta engage that when you’re doing “Rrrrrah!” or else that won’t stabilize things. So that’s what you gotta do with the sides.

Now Finally the back. The back is another thing that people miss. We can’t have the back shoving down. And we can’t have it totally loose. It has to have a little bit of upward activity.

One way to find this is with a sort of velociraptor sound. Try this crazy thing for me. Try a “Chhhhh!”. Okay. Here you go. Very scary, good. One more time, “Chhhh!” It was great.

So we have that “Chh, chh”, the back of the tongue also engaged. That’s one of the great things.

If you are trying the “Rrr, rrr”, that D or R sound in the front, “Rrr, rrr”, and then you engage “Chh, chh” in the back, “Chhrrr, chhrrr...”, you’re also curling the sides, “Chhrrr, chhrrr”, that is how you’re gonna be able to find the trill.

Again, most people are neglecting the lift of the back and the lift of the sides when they are doing the trill.

So I hope that that helps you guys start finding the mechanics of all the aspects of the tongue so that you can get the trill.

One more bonus tip for you. If you try another trill like a lip trill, “bbbb...” some people can trick themselves into doing it by feeding their tongue through that trill, “bbbbrrrrr, bbbbrrrrr”, and using the one trill to influence the other. That’s just another nice trick for you to try as you’re experimenting.

So that’s how to do it. Let’s fast forward to say that you figured that out after some practice and now also those folks who already know how to do this, we’re gonna put it to an exercise.

We’re gonna go up and down with a tounge trill. This helps with your breath support. It helps with your flexibility, and with your registration because we’re making an even sound, even volume, even production all across the range.

So here’s what it’s gonna be. 1-3-5-8-5-3-1 guys down here, “Rrr...”. And ladies up here, “Rrr...”. And here we go together with the trill.

Grrreat! Alright. Awsome stuff. So, now you know a little bit more about how to do that trill, how to get that mechanics right. And then also you can use it in an exercise to help build your voice.

Hi everybody! My name is Justin Stoney and I'm the founder of New York Vocal Coaching here in New York City.

Welcome to episode 48 of Voice Lessons To The World, the show where we want to help you guys as singers by answering your questions from all over the world.

And I'll give you a chance to ask questions later. But our question for this week comes from Sophie M. in Nice, France. And this is actually part three, the third and final part of our Vocal Fry Trilogy.

And Sophie writes, "Dear Justin, what is that crazy raspy sound that Sara Bareilles does in the middle of notes, like in the song "Gravity"?

Now that's a great question Sophie. And this is actually a part of our vocal fry stylization. I think you can guess it, the sound that she's doing is actually a fry.

But it's a very specific fry coordination, stylistically, that we're going to learn together today. This is something very cool, it's something that can make you sound even more authentic with your riffs, and with your pop, rock, R&B; stylization, okay.

So first one more quick recap. We talked about what is the vocal fry, right? It's the register beneath your chest voice, that [vocal fry] sound where the cords are short, fat, and lightly compressed.

And we know that it can help with our high notes, with our style. And we saw stylistically with Ryan Adams last time that we can fry into notes, right?

We can start our pitches with the lowest of tones first, and then springboarding into whatever pitch that we want to do, again for style or for the note. So last week we really explored what is it to fry into the note to have the onset be the vocal fry.

But now here's the very cool thing, Sophie. It is possible to have the fry be the offset - to get out of the note with a vocal fry.

Now this is so subtle and so cool that if you can hear this and get this right in pop music, you're going to really have an awesome stylistic benefit. So this is one of these very subtle things that I want you guys to start hearing.

And so you asked me, Sophie, about the song "Gravity”. So I'm going to take a look at it. I'm going to work through this and show you this thing that I'm talking about which I'm going to call a fall-off.

You guys… heard… I like to invent terms for things that are in pop music. But we talked about a slash which is actually a grace note. But you can call it a slash when we sort of have a quick note into another. But this is going to be a fall off where the note falls off into a fry.

And so I'm going to take this song "Gravity" and explore some of these things so that you can start to hear it. Then I'm going to give you a chance to try it.

So here's Sara Bareilles' "Gravity".

“Something always brings me back to you

It never takes too long”

Right? This is a slash. “Never, never, never”.

“It never takes too long

No matter what I say or do

I’ll still feel you here

Till the moment I’m gone”

Now there it is. There’s the fall-off. “Till the moment I’m gone” Do you hear that? I didn’t just go “Till the moment I’m gone” or “Till the moment I’m gone” but “Till the moment I’m gone”. I go down into the vocal fry for a second and then keep going. “Till the moment I’m gone” and there’s your fall-off. Let’s look further.

“You hold me without touch

You keep me without chain

I never wanted anything so much”

Now there’s another slash, “Never wanted any, any, any, padah, padah, any… Never wanted anything so much”

“Than to drown in your love

And not feel your reign”

And there you go again. “And not feel your reign” Do you hear that? I fall down, I fall-off the note into a fry. “And not feel your reign”

It's a very, very cool little nuance to pop. You're going to hear it in Sara Bareilles. You're going to hear it in tons of artists. And if you can learn to do this, it's tougher than it looks, you're really going to have a new benefit to your sound.

So now again if the fry is something way down here, and we fry into the note, what we're going to do with this is fry down, fall down, fall off, into the note.

And so I'm going to create an exercise here for you guys today to help you get this, alright. We're gonna do "way way way" on an 8-8-8 and then down as if we're going down an octave to 1. And we're gonna go down all the way into the fry.

Take a listen to what I mean. We're gonna do this... “WAY - WAY - WAY” Okay? “WAY - WAY - WAY” I'm dropping my voice all the way down to fry.

Now today since we're gonna be up in pop land, I'm not going to separate guys from girls. Everybody's gonna be on the same pitch today. And do your best to slide down into the vocal fry that you now know.

So here we go, guys and girls same notes together...

(Exercise)

Excellent work. Amazing work on that new concept of falling down, falling off, into vocal fry.

Use it mostly for your style, but it's also good for technique. Because if you have registration where you can move from sky-high notes to low notes quickly like that, that means that there's not so much of a separation in how you're using your air and your sound between registers that are far apart. It's very, very good coordination if you can do it. And it looks like you guys did a great job.

Hi everybody! My name is Justin Stoney and I'm the founder of New York Vocal Coaching here in New York City.

Welcome to episode 47 of Voice Lessons To The World, the show where we want to help you guys as singers by answering your questions from all over the world.

And I'll give you a chance to ask questions later. But our question for this week comes from Sidd P. in Kanpur, India. And this is going to be part two of our Vocal Fry Trilogy, okay.

Sidd writes, "Dear Justin, I've heard that the vocal fry can help me with my high notes. How does this work?"

It's a great question, Sidd. And you're right to assume now that the vocal fry can do great things for us technically, with our high notes, with our style, the works. So today I'm going to show you how the vocal fry really applies to style and to technique.

So just a little recap, last episode we talked about what is the fry, right? The fry is a register beneath our chest voice where the cords make a sound that's a little bit different than normal singing which is a sort of [vocal fry] sound, right?

The cords get short, fat, loose, but also compressed at the same time. So, light but compressed. And it's a register of our voice that today, like I say, we're going to work on style and technique.

Now we heard last time some sort of crazy examples. Elmer Fudd in my speaking voice, that's an excessive vocal fry. And then Britney Spears actually gets a bad rap a lot for excessively using vocal fry in her singing voice. So we heard some of the extremes. But now for something that's a little bit less extreme.

When you're doing a pop, rock, R&B; or even country song, the vocal fry is very, very present throughout, often. Right? And a lot of times what we do is start the note with a fry, right? We begin the pitch with a low vocal fry and then enter into the note. And this typically happens when the word starts with a vowel. It doesn't have to but that's typically when it happens.

So what I'm going to do now is do a song by Ryan Adams called "Oh My Sweet Carolina" and I want you guys to see if you can hear all the times that I'm using my vocal fry to get into the notes. It's a kind of cool, stylistic, and technical effect.

So here it is, and I've got my soul mate here today to help out. "Oh my sweet Carolina".

”Well I went down to Houston

And I stopped in San Antone

I passed up the station for the bus

Was trying to find me something

But I wasn't sure just what

I ended up with pockets full of dust

Oh my sweet Carolina

What compels me to go

Oh my sweet disposition

May you one day carry me home”

Alright, so that's "Oh my sweet Carolina" by Ryan Adams. And you heard all the times that I was vocal frying into the pitch, right? “Oh my…” Right?

I could have just done... “Oh my sweet Carolina” But I do... “Oh my sweet Carolina” And it helps me to not only get into that pitch in a compressed light way, but it also is a cool stylistic effect for our more contemporary sounds.

Now let's talk about how this can really benefit us technically. That song is not all that high. But what's cool is when I'm entering through a fry I have a light connected sound. Connected meaning not going to my falsetto.

So even though that goes to... “Oh my sweet Carolina” If I did want to go sky high with it the vocal fry could help. “Oh my sweet Carolina” ”Oh my sweet Carolina” “Oh my sweet Carolina” “Oh my sweet Carolina”

Now it's going way higher than the song. But the “Oh my sweet Carolina” that can help me get up into my high notes with very little effort whatsoever because the fry is helping me out.

So now how does this work? The vocal cords are getting a little bit of that compression while also remaining not squeezed. So we're not blowing lots of air here.

We're just allowing the naturalness of that fry to help assist us with closing the cords. It's called medial compression and the vocal fry helps us with that medial - to the center- compression, right?

So you heard what it is stylistically and you heard me sort of messing around going sky-high with it. Now I'm going to give you a chance to do an exercise that will help you both with your style and technique all at once, where we're going to enter in through the fry and I'm going to actually let you go sky-high with this.

Now if it does go to falsetto, that's not a problem. But we are going to let the fry help us to feel a light medial compression today, okay?

So the exercise is going to be "Oh no no no”. Right? You hear how that's got a little bit of a conversational quality to it. But we're going to put it as a vocal exercise. And we're gonna do 8-5-3-1.

So the exercise will be this... “OH - NO - NO - NO” So you start with that fry... “OH - NO - NO - NO” So that's gonna be guys down there. Ladies up here... “OH - NO - NO - NO” Right? And we're going to go up and down together on "Oh no no no". Okay, so here we go!

(Exercise)

Spectacular stuff. So you see that that you can use the fry to find a light, compressed sound going up and down. You're going to use that for your technique, sometimes. And you're going to use that for your style, sometimes.

Now I will admit that that can be a little bit fatiguing, right? It's not going to damage your voice but it can be a little bit fatiguing.

So don't just do this fry, just like we said with the glottals, don't just do it til the cows come home, right? We've got to do this stuff in moderation.

When you're building these muscles and some of these coordinations, it can fatigue your voice a little bit. Don't worry about it but also don't overdo this kind of work. It's very athletic vocally.

Hi everybody! My name is Justin Stoney and I'm the founder of New York Vocal Coaching here in New York City.

Welcome to episode 46 of Voice Lessons To The World, the show where we want to help you guys as singers by answering your questions from all over.

And I'll give you a chance to ask questions later. But our question for this week comes from Orla O. in Dublin, Ireland.

And Orla writes, "Dear Justin, I hear so much about the vocal fry. What is it, and how do I do it?"

That's great, Orla! And we're getting so many questions from all over the world about the vocal fry.

And it's a very important vocal concept - so important that I'm actually going to do a vocal fry trilogy. For the next three episodes we're going to take three different questions all about the vocal fry so you guys really understand it and how it can benefit your voice.

But first of all Orla, what is the vocal fry?

Okay, the vocal fry is another one of our vocal registers. We've talked about so many in the past, more to come. But it's one of the registers of the voice.

But the strange thing is that it doesn't quite sound the same as most of the more sung registers of the voice. Take a listen to it as I drop my voice down here.

If I take "mum", and I just do... “Mum mum mum…” Now that's the vocal fry. It's a register beneath my chest voice. It's actually notes that are lower than my low notes.

And what happens is the vocal cords shorten via the thyroarytenoid muscle. Whoa. Alright, they shorten and fatten but they're also kind of loose and there's a way to make them phonate in a sort of loose yet compressed fashion, where we get a kind of fried sound.

So it's not the same kind of phonation as our sung sounds. But it is actually a phonation that's used in singing and something that we are going to need to learn both for technique and for style.

But let me just give you a couple of examples that are more famous that you hear the vocal fry.

In a speaking voice you hear it in the character Elmer Fudd from Looney Tunes“You screwy wabbits! [Vocal fry]” Right? Remember that? “I'm hunting wabbits, you screwy wabbits!”

So we hear that in speech and then sometimes we hear it in excessive ways in singing.

If you remember the song "Hit Me Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears.

“Oh baby baby

Oh baby baby

Oh baby baby

How was I supposed to know

That something wasn't right here”

Now I'm sure you want me to stop so I'm going to. But there's an example from speech and from singing of the vocal fry in action.

Now another question that people have about this voice is, is it bad for you? It sounds like it would be... does it not? The vocal fry, that [vocal fry] sound, that sounds like that's really going to be destroying or ruining my voice.

And in fact, no. Because it's a natural register of the voice, we know just because of the nature of it, it's not inherently destructive.

Now it could be damaging if you do it excessively, if you do it all the time, if you do it without other variety in your voice, if you're never speaking on the airflow with nice sound and tone but you're always just down here in your vocal fry and you're just a little bit too cool for school and you're always talking in the fry, okay that's not going to be so good.

But in fact, speech therapists even use the vocal fry to help people heal their voices because it's such a loose and light phonation.

So the vocal fry isn't bad, it's not inherently bad. But in fact it could be good if it's used properly and if it's used in some degree of moderation.

Now is the vocal fry good for you? In fact, yes, right? We just heard a sort of crazy example of the vocal fry in a song. But I'm going to show you in these upcoming episodes of the vocal fry trilogy how we're going to need the vocal fry for our style.

There's some elements that the fry is used for within song work and we need to have it. Then it's also going to be useful for your vocal technique, since it's a compressed but also light phonation.

We know that one of the things that we struggle with as singers is “How do I find something that is solid yet loose at the same time?” The vocal fry is going to become one of our great answers for solving that particular issue. And like I say, wait till these next episodes. We're going to work on it together.

But today all I want to do for us is just see if you guys can get into the fry, alright. I'm gonna just give you an exercise and a chance to find the fry in your own voice.

Now some of you are just going to get this right off the bat. Like I say, it might be something that you're [Vocal Fry] already talking with if you've kind of got a cool voice, you might be talking with a fry already. But other people may not know how to get into their vocal fry.

What we're going to do is take a MUM exercise. A simple MUM, five four three two one, MUM.

And I want to give you guys a chance to practice the moment when your chest voice moves over into vocal fry. Again it's lower than your chest voice, so you're going to feel your voice want to drop into vocal fry. And I want you to try to let it.

Now here's the exercise. We're going to do... “MUM - MUM - MUM - MUM - MUM “ As simple as that.

But watch what's gonna happen down here in my voice. I'll have a choice, I could do this... “MUM - MUM - MUM - MUM - MUM…” And get too loose and breathy as I go to my low notes.

Or I could do this... “MUM - MUM - MUM - MUM - MUM [Vocal fry]” And allow it to make that natural transition down to fry.

That's the name of the game for today. All I want you guys to do is find where in your voice your cords want to move to fry and then let them do it, okay.

So ladies up here… “MUM - MUM - MUM - MUM - MUM” Guys down here... “MUM - MUM - MUM - MUM - MUM

And I don't know when it's gonna happen. But go ahead and let your voice fry when it wants. So here we go...

(Exercise)

Fantastic stuff. So I hope you guys found that moment where your chest voice merges with your vocal fry. So you can determine where that register is for you and get into it easily.

Hi everybody! My name is Justin Stoney and I'm the founder of New York Vocal Coaching here in New York City.

Welcome to episode 45 of Voice Lessons To The World, the show where we want to help you guys as singers by answering your questions from all over.

And I'll give you a chance to ask questions later, but our question for this week comes from Reg B. in Vancouver, British Columbia.

And Reg writes, “Dear Justin, I'd love for you to do an episode on classical singing, specifically on ‘what is the passaggio and how do i navigate it well?’ ”

Wow. Great, Reg. Thank you so much for that question. Yes, we will do that episode right now on the passaggio.

This is a very common term. It's used in classical singing, but actually I want you guys to know this no matter what style of singing you're doing.

Today we will do a little bit more of a classical episode, but this is for all singers everywhere, really - this idea of the passaggio. So, what is the passaggio?

Passagio comes from the Bel Canto singing tradition of vocal technique and understanding of the voice.

And you guys don't know about Bel Canto, I really hope you go and research this a little bit or find a teacher that understands Bel Canto. So much of what we know about vocal technique comes from Bel Canto. It's not everything, but it's really really one of the very finest vocal technique systems in the whole world. So check out Bel Canto.

But it's an Italian tradition, the Italian vocal school. And passaggio is an Italian word

that means “passage”, okay?

Now I know you guys know a little bit now about vocal registration. We have different registers of our voice.

There's the chest voice, the head voice, the falsetto, the mix, vocal fry, flageolet, whistle voice. There's many registers. We're going to talk about all of them in great detail as we go forward into the future.

But the registers of your voice also have transitions between them. And usually the

lower mechanism, often chest voice and the higher mechanism, often head voice, has a moment of transition, which is that passagio, Right? - transitioning between the vocal registers.

So there's a lot of terms that are sometimes used to describe this. There is the passaggio, also like I say known as the passage or transition or bridge or break or that place in my voice where it cracks so horribly and miserably that I want to crawl into a hole and never show my face to the world ever again. There's tons of terms that we can use to describe that passagio event.

But what I'm going to do today is show you first with a song how to navigate the passaggio and then give you tips on how to navigate it and then give you an exercise too, for men and women on how to navigate the passaggio, Okay?

Now this song here is called “Oh Del Mio Dolce Ardor”. It's a very common Italian art song that many of you classical singers may know. I'm going to navigate the passaggio in this song to show you what that sounds like. This is by Gluck.

[Song]

Okay. So that top note in there, that “Brama…”, that is a note that is right on the male Primo passaggio, which is right around an E, or F. This happens to be an F.

Now here's some things that could go wrong. That did not go wrong, that was good. But here's some things that could go wrong.

I could go “Brama…” and go into falsetto. “Brama…” and not be able to connect that. That's one thing.

I may lower my larynx too far and “Brama…” and have too deep of a sound.

I may raise my larynx up “Brama…” and have too tight of a sound.

I also may spread my lips and do “Brama…” and get too wide of a sound.

I may also do “Brama…” and get too loud on my passagio and that would also not be good to have to change the volume.

So there's tons of ways that I could navigate a passagio poorly. But really, Bramato Oggetto”  the one where nothing really changes and the air zips inside my head - that's the one that we're looking for for navigation of the passaggio.

So let me give you some flat-out tips for navigating that passaggio region, okay?

We want to stay narrow, right? We don't want to get wider, okay?

We want to use nasal resonance, right? In fact we don't want to lift the soft palate too far. We want to have some “hmm” and nasal resonance in the sound.

Like I say we don't want to get louder. We don't want to have to push the voice past the passaggio area.

We also don't want to use more breath. That's a similar thing, but not quite the same. We don't want to push more breath across the passaggio.

We don't want to go to falsetto. We don't want to get too light or for females too heady of a head voice, right? We don't want to get too light or airy of a phonation right at the passaggio. We want it to stay solid enough.

And then finally we don't want to jam the larynx down. We don't want to have too dark or too heavy of a sound.

And of course, we don't want to have too lifted or squeezed of a sound with the larynx.

So, these are all great tips I think for what things to think about that could be going wrong with your passaggio region and how to right them.

Now I'm going to give you an exercise. First we're gonna have men coming up. And I'm going to switch and change to the ladies going up. And give you an exercise that helps you do some of those things that I just mentioned, just built into the exercise. All you have to do is do it. You don't have to even think because it's built into the exercise.

What we're gonna do is “ma-awn-nawn”, okay? “ma” on the bottom, something wider and then “awn-nawn” on something smaller, slimmer and more nasally resonant on the top.

Take a listen to this. “ma-awn-nawn-nawn”. Okay? the bottom is wider, the top is smaller and more contained. That's what we're looking for for the passaggio region. So this exercise is going to help you to do that.

Now here's guys with me right here on “ma-awn-nawn” and I'll tell the ladies when we're switching to you, Okay? But here is guys with “ma-awn-nawn” here it is.

(Exercise)

Fantastic work, guys! So you can see that we use the same qualities of how to navigate the passaggio as we go across it and then that's how you're going to bridge the gap into your high notes and give them size without giving them strain.

Now we're going to switch right to ladies and we're going to go up way high, ladies. And you're going to do the exact same thing. The very same concepts apply for

you.

So let’s start ladies right here, “ma-on-on-on” okay? There you go.

(Exercise)

Spectacular. So I hope you guys now understand in greater detail what the passaggio is and how you can navigate it.

We got some great tips there and also some practical exercises for you to feel that slimmer, more contained shape. That's going to help you bridge that gap and not have that miserable cracking or shifting in the voice right when you don't want it to the most.
