1. 魔法の「イー」
But today, my very, very favorite vowel, the magic EE. Okay, so the EE vowel is just so, so great. And voice teachers and singers often consider it to be a sort of magical vowel.
ただ今回は、私の大好きな母音、魔法の「イー」をやりましょう。「イー」の母音はとっても素晴らしいんです。ヴォイス・ティーチャーやシンガーの中には、これが魔法の母音だと考える人もたくさんいます。
The reason why this is true is if you can do a great EE vowel, things tend to go really well for the voice and really well in the universe. If there’s problems with the EE vowel though, there tends to be some kind of limitations.
その考えが正しい理由は、「イー」の母音をうまくできれば、声は良い方向に向かい、全てがうまくいく傾向にあるからです。逆に「イー」の母音に問題があると、限界が出てくる傾向にあります。
So today we’re going to talk about how to do a great EE vowel and what that can mean for your voice which, I promise, is some magical stuff.
ですので、今回はこの素晴らしい「イー」の母音の歌い方と、これがあなたの声にどういった意味を持つのか（魔法のような効果があると約束しますよ）について話していきましょう。

So, first why is the EE vowel so awesome? Because it totally is.

One reason is the EE vowel has more compression than the other vowels if you’re doing it properly.

And what that means is as we’re going up the voice tends to want to flip to falsetto if you’re a male or head voice if you’re a female as you’re going higher. But the compression that’s naturally in the EE vowel is very good for preventing that crack from happening.
どういうことかというと、声は高く行くにしたがって、男性ならファルセットに、女性ならヘッドヴォイスに裏返る傾向があるからです。でも「イー」の母音にもともとあるコンプレッションが、裏返りを防ぐのにとても役立ってくれます。
So you can often go higher with the EE vowel than with the other vowels if you’re doing it right. That’s one thing.
ですから、正しくできていれば、他の母音よりも「イー」の母音の方が高いところまで行けることがよくあるのです。

The other thing is singers often struggle with some tension in the tongue and jaw and some compensation. We hear it right away with the EE vowel if there’s something going wrong.
もう一つは、舌やあごの緊張や、その埋め合わせに苦しんでいるシンガーが多いことです。「イー」の母音を聞けばすぐに、何かが間違っていると気付くことができます。
If the singer can do “EE”, things are going well. But if something like “EE” “EE” happens, then we know that there’s a problem with the tongue or the jaw.
シンガーが「（純粋な母音で）イー」とできるなら、うまく行っていると言えます。でも「（舌を引っ込めて）イー、イー」となっているなら、舌やあごに問題があることに気付くことでしょう。
So a great EE vowel will be the front of the tongue forward touching just behind the bottom teeth, and the back of the tongue lifted very high and tall. “EE”. That’s the EE vowel that we’re really looking for.
舌先が前に行き、下歯のちょうど後ろにくっついて、なおかつ舌の後ろ側はとても高く持ち上げられているのが、素晴らしい「イー」の母音です。「イー」。これが目指している「イー」の母音です。
声に自然な明るさを与えてくれるから
Now, the next thing about an EE vowel that’s so, so great is it gives us the brightness and the ringing sound that we love in voices.
次に「イー」の母音に関して言えるのは、この母音が、耳に心地良い明るさや、はっきりとした響きを声に与えてくれるということです。
Now we like to have the dark sound of the voice, too. But we often want the bright to be present.
もちろん声には暗い（深い）要素もあった方がいいですよね。でも声の明るさも持てるようにしたいのです。
And singers get the brightness of their voice sometimes by pushing, sometimes by raising the larynx too high, by compressing the cords, or by spreading the mouth. There’s lots of ways to get the sound too bright.
明るさを得ようとして、声を押し出したり、喉頭（のど）を高く持ち上げたり、声帯を締め付けたり、口を広げたりするシンガーもいます。明る過ぎる声になってしまう歌い方はたくさんありますね。
But the EE vowel gives you a natural brightness because it’s our brightest vowel. So if you do the EE vowel well, your voice will just have a great brightness to it because of that magic EE.
でも「イー」の母音は母音の中でも一番明るいものなので、自然な明るさを声に与えてくれます。ですから「イー」の母音がうまくできれば、その魔法の力があなたの声に素晴らしい明るさをもたらしてくれるでしょう。
よくある問題
Now, let’s talk about some problems with the EE vowel.
では次に、「イー」の母音の問題点について話していきましょう。

One thing that people do is spread it out too much even though it doesn’t need to be. A lot of singers will do “EE” when really we were just looking for “EE”.
一つは、必要もないのに口を広げ過ぎてしまうことです。「（純粋に）イー」としたいところを「（口の幅を広げて）イー」としてしまうシンガーは多いものです。
Again, it’s the front of the tongue forward and touching just behind the bottom teeth. And the back of the tongue lifted, “EE”. So we don’t need to do “EE”. This will cause some problems.
もう一度言いますが、舌先は前へ持っていき、下歯の後ろに触れるようにします。そして舌の後ろ側は持ち上げると、「イー」です。ですから「（口の幅を広げて）イー」とする必要はありません。これだと問題が出てきてしまいます。
声をきつくし過ぎる
Next, the EE vowel could be too tight. It could squeeze too much or it doesn’t really help us to keep the larynx stable. So make sure you’re not over compressing your EE vowel.
次に、「イー」の母音は声をきつくし過ぎることがあります。声帯を締め付け過ぎたり、喉頭を不安定にさせたりしてしまいます。ですから「イー」の母音を締め付け過ぎないようにしましょう。
Don’t squeeze it as an “EE, EE”. We don’t need all that extra compression. Just that natural compression of a pure EE vowel is enough. So watch that you’re not squeezing the larynx up or squeezing the cords too tight with the EE.
「（きつい声で）イー、イー」と締め付けないように。声帯を過剰にくっつける必要はありません。純粋な「イー」の母音の、自然なコンプレッションで十分ですから、喉頭を締め付けて持ち上げたり、声帯を過剰に締め付けたりしないように注意しましょう。

Now the next thing is, is the vowel itself? So many people think that they’re doing EE but they’re really not. And this is the major problem with the EE.

So many people will do either “EE” and we have a retracted tongue where the front is moving back, “EE”. Watch out for that because that’s stabilizing the larynx with your tongue. We don’t want this “EE”.
一つは舌先が後ろに下がってしまい、「（舌を引っ込めて）イー」としてしまうことです。舌で喉頭を固めてしまっているので、気を付けましょう。この「イー」はしたくないものです。
And the other thing is people will try to do “EE” and end up with “IH, IH” or even “EH” where the back of the tongue is dropping.
もう一つは「イー」と発音しようとしているのに、「（イとエの中間くらいで）イー、イー」とか、最悪「エー」と、舌の後ろ側が落ちてしまうことです。
Both of these things, the “EE” and the “EH”, is either the front or the back of the tongue stabilizing the larynx and then all manner of problems start to happen.
この「（舌を引っ込めて）イー」と「（舌の後ろ側が落ちて）エー」の二つは、舌の前側か後ろ側のどちらかが喉頭を固めてしまうことで、こうなるとあらゆる問題が起こり始めます。
If we can keep the front forward and the back tall “EE”, then we’ve got our EE vowel in place.
舌先を前に、後ろ側を高く保ち「イー」とできれば、それが正しい「イー」の母音です。
曲例：アメリカ国歌の「星条旗」
Let me just show you a classic example of where the EE vowel goes wrong. The American Star-Spangled Banner which is so, so hard for singers to sing often.
それでは「イー」の母音がまずい方向に行ってしまう、典型的な例をお見せしましょう。アメリカ国歌の「星条旗」は歌うのがとても難しい曲ですね。
We’ve got the end, “O’er the land of the free” Oh man, I really spread it out. “O’er the land of the free” Oh no! I didn’t need to go wide with it.
曲の最後を歌ってみましょう。「オア・ザ・ランド・オブ・ザ・（口を横に広げて）フリー」やっちまった、（口を）広げ過ぎた。「オア・ザ・ランド・オブ・ザ・フリー」オー・ノー！広げる必要はなかったのに。
Or singers sometimes do, “O’er the land of the FREH” “FREH” Right? Now that’s not even the vowel. That doesn’t sound all that bad, but “FREH” - that’s an EH vowel. So I had to compensate with my tongue.
それか「オア・ザ・ランド・オブ・ザ・（母音を変えて）フレー」「フレー」とやってしまうこともあります。もう「イー」の母音じゃないですよね。声は悪くないですが、「フレー」だと「エー」の母音ですよね。舌で埋め合わせをしてしまっています。
“O’er the land of the free” If I’m singing the EE vowel properly, I get a nice ringing sound and it’s very effortless. It stays connected, it stays bright, and it’s easy to do. “O’er the land of the free” And there’s my EE vowel in the great place.
「オア・ザ・ランド・オブ・ザ・フリー」と、正しく「イー」の母音を歌えれば、無理なく声を鳴り響かせることができます。裏返らず、明るさを保ち、なおかつ楽に歌えます。「オア・ザ・ランド・オブ・ザ・フリー」。このように「イー」の母音を良い位置に持っていきましょう。
エクササイズ：魔法の「イー」
Now just with our I vowel, we had an exercise that helped combat the problems of the vowel that we’re working on. So we’re going to do that again today.
さて、「アイ」の母音の時は、その母音の問題に打ち勝てるようなエクササイズをやりましたね。ですから今回ももう一度それをやっていきましょう。
This time, with “GWEEN”. G-W-E-E-N, “GWEEN”. The “G” is going to get your tongue in the right place. And the “W” is going to prevent you from spreading. And the “N” is going to help you keep the air inside the head.
今回は「グウィーン」です。G-W-E-E-N で「グウィーン」。Gは舌を正しい場所に持っていってくれます。Wは口を広げないように防いでくれます。そしてNは息を頭の内側（鼻腔）に保つように促してくれます。
So we’re going to do “GWEEN, GWEEN, GWEEN” together on a 5-3-4-2-1, “GWEEN”. And this is going to help you get your EE vowel in the right place.
それでは一緒に、「グウィーン、グウィーン、グウィーン」を5-3-4-2-1（の音階）でやっていきましょう。「イー」の母音が正しくできるように促すものです。
So, guys, you are going to be right here, “GWEEN, GWEEN, GWEEN…”. And ladies up here. “GWEEN, GWEEN, GWEEN…”. And we’re going to do this together and feel the magic of the EE vowel. So here we go!
男性はこの高さで、「グウィーン、グウィーン…」女性はこの上で、「グウィーン、グウィーン…」。一緒にやっていき、「イー」の母音の魔力を感じましょう。では行きます！
Great, great stuff! So, that will help you keep your EE vowel in the magical place and start learning what it feels like to do a really proper EE vowel. And like I say, it’s going to make all right with the voice and all right with the universe, too.
