Hi everybody! My name is Justin Stoney and I'm the founder of New York Vocal Coaching here in New York City.

Welcome to episode 55 of Voice Lessons To The World, the show where we want to help you guys as singers by answering your questions from all over the world.

And I'll give you a chance to ask questions later but our question for this week comes from Chun K. in Tianjin, China.

And Chun writes, "Dear Justin, I've heard that the jaw and the tongue should not operate together when we sing. What does this mean?"

Now Chun that's a spectacular question. And it's true, the jaw and the tongue really operate together a lot. They sort of are married together when people sing.

And it's not the blessed, positive, happy, healthy kind of marriage. No. it's always been a very unhealthy relationship.

And, the jaw and the tongue - they were never meant to be together. I mean it just was all wrong from the very start. I mean they're always in each other's way.

The tongue tries to do a simple L, “LAH”, and the jaw comes along for the ride, “LAH”. Or the jaw tries to do a simple Ah vowel, “AH”, and the tongue comes along for the ride, “AH”.

And it just is causing all kinds of problems for the voice. I mean limited vocal range, overall tension in the sound, vowels don't even sound like themselves anymore, registration problems, breaks and cracks, songs with a lot of words in them are very difficult to sing.

And you know I personally feel bad for the "little people"- the larynx and the vocal cords. I mean they're just trying to do their job. Meanwhile the jaw the tongue are always at it together and they can't even do it.

So, I mean... I hate to be the bearer of bad news Chun, but I think we've got to separate these two for good. So today I officially declare jaw and tongue, divorced.

Now it's very sad of course. We never like to see that. But I think there's hope. I think we can get the jaw and the tongue independent and functioning back on their feet again together.

And I think if we do we're going to really improve the voice in an incredible way. So today, two exercises- One where the tongue gets to be awesome on its own, independent of the jaw for once. And, same thing, the jaw gets a chance to be awesome, independent of the tongue for once.

So our first exercise is going to be for just the tongue, okay. We're going to do a 1-2-3-2-1 on KANA. So the tongue is just going to move without the jaw. KANA - KANA - KANA. Right?

Just like this... “KANA - KANA - KANA - KANA - KANA” See it? And now ladies up here... “KANA - KANA - KANA - KANA - KANA” Just the tongue, no jaw. Here we go...

(Exercise)

So nice. So, that was great. The tongue got to be back on its feet, independent of the jaw.

Now how about the jaw? We can't neglect the jaw. This exercise is going to be just the jaw moving, tongue totally out of the equation. With BE. Okay, we're going to do BE - BE - BE. Make sure that jaw just gets to be really free and active. And the tongue, out of there.

So BE - BE - BE on an 8-5-1, BE. Just like this. “BE - BE - BE” Right? That's guys. And ladies up here... “BE - BE - BE” Okay? Here we go...

(Exercise)

Fantastic. So there, the jaw got the chance to do all the work with no tongue involved.

So I know in some ways this has been a really sad day. You never like to see a breakup. But I think overall it's for the best. Right, Chun? And, right everybody?

I mean it's great to see the tongue moving freely and independently without the jaw, and the jaw moving freely and independently without the tongue. I just know that causes a major growth for people singing to see that kind of freedom.
