And today’s question comes from Mikey C. In Nailsea, England.

And Mikey writes, “Dear Justin, why did you become a voice teacher?”
「ジャスティンさん、こんにちは。ジャスティンさんはどうしてヴォイスティーチャーになったんですか？」
Thank you so much, Mikey. And obviously today is a special episode, our 50th episode. And I just want to thank you guys so much and just let you know that we are so blessed and grateful to be able to be a part of your vocal journey.
マイキーさん、どうもありがとう。今回はエピソード50、特別編です。私からみなさんに「ありがとう」を伝えたいです。そしてみなさんの歌の旅のお供ができることに、本当に感謝しています。
And I thank you so much for the kind e-mails and messages that we get from people all over the world. It’s really, truly an honor to be a part of helping you guys to sing and to being there on your vocal journey. So thank you for joining us for these 50. And here’s to many many more.

1. 私のストーリー
But today I thought, actually, it would be hopefully helpful to actually share the story cause it’s a very, very cool story about how I became a voice teacher that I hope can help.
ただ今回は、私がヴォイスティーチャーになった経緯についてシェアしたいと思います。とっても面白い話なので、みなさんの役に立てばと思います。
So, I always said “I will never be a voice teacher! That’s the last thing I would ever want to do.” And sure enough, a sort of miraculous story happened. And I want to share that story with you.
私はいつも「絶対にヴォイスティーチャーにはならない！一番やりたくないことなんだ」と言っていたのですが、果たして奇跡的なことが起こったんです。この話をみなさんとシェアしたいと思います。
I was… I came to New York to be a singer. And I was here for only about two weeks. I was just fresh off the boat.
私がニューヨークに来たのは、シンガーになるためでした。着いてからたった2週間くらいで、右も左もわからなかった時のことです。
And I went to an audition. And, again only two weeks into the city. And I was in the waiting room when this man walks into the room.
私はとあるオーディションに来ていました。そう、ニューヨークに来てからまだ2週間です。控え室にいると、ある男性が入ってきました。
And he says to everybody in the waiting room, “Does anybody in here play the piano?” And I kind of sheepishly raise my hand. And he says, “You, come out here in the hall.” So I go out.
彼は控え室にいる全員に対して言いました。「誰かピアノが弾ける人はいないか？」恐る恐る私が手を上げると、彼は「君、ホールまで来てくれ。」と言ったので、私は部屋を出て行きました。
And he says, “How well do you play the piano?” And I say, “You know, pretty well.” He says, “Do you think you can sightread and play well enough to play an audition?” And I say, “Yeah, I think I probably could.”
「ピアノの腕前はどうなんだ？」「えーと、まあまあです。」「君は初見でオーディションの伴奏ができると思うかい？」「そうですね、たぶんできると思います」
So he gets on a cell phone and he says, “Yeah, I got some kid here. Yeah, he thinks he can do it. Okay, We’ll take the kid.”
すると彼は携帯を取り出しました。「ああ、弾ける子を見つけたよ。そうだ、自信はあるらしい。わかった、この子を連れてくる」
So, he says ”Finish up your audition. Come down the hall. We want you to play these auditions.” I go into the waiting room.
そして彼は「オーディションを終えてきて。そしたらホールまで来るんだ。オーディションで弾いてほしい」と言い残し、私は控え室に戻りました。
2. バリー・モス
And the monitor says to me, “Now, you know who that is, right?” I say, “No. I don’t know who that is.” He says, “That’s one of the most influential casting directors of all time. He has cast films, TV shows, Broadway shows.” He says, “You better get ready.”
部屋に戻るとモニター（PAさんのこと）が話しかけてきました。「あの人※が誰だか知っているよな？」「いえ、知らないですけど…」「業界ですごく影響力の強いキャスティングディレクターなんだよ！映画やテレビ、ブロードウェイでキャスティングしてきた人なんだ。覚悟しておきな」
So I was starting to get nervous. And I finish up my audition. And then I go down the hall to play for this big audition. And my jaw was on the floor.
自分でも緊張してきているのがわかりました。私は自分のオーディションを終え、この大きなオーディションで伴奏をするために、ホールへと向かったのですが…その状況に私は驚きを隠せませんでした。
And I’ve never been so nervous in my entire life. Because here I am, two weeks into the city, and I’m playing for big stars as they walk through the door for this audition. I just couldn’t believe that I was playing for a bunch of people that I knew.
人生でこの時ほど緊張したことはありません。ニューヨークに来てたったの2週間なのに、オーディションのドアから次々と出てくるビッグスターの伴奏をしていたのです。自分の知っている歌手たちの伴奏をしていることが、全く信じられませんでした。
And somehow I survived this. And somehow I had the audacity at the end of it to say to the casting director, I said, “Don’t pay me.” I said, “Take two headshots and call me when I’m right for something.” And he said, “Okay, alright.” So he takes the pictures.
そして私はなんとか乗り切りました。最後にはそのキャスティングディレクターに、ずうずうしくもこう言ったのです。「ギャラはいらないです」「ヘッドショットを2枚撮って。何かに向いていると思ったら電話してください」「わかった、いいだろう」そうして彼は写真を撮ってくれました。
But he says, “You know, Justin. We saw something in you. We think that you have what it takes to be a really great vocal coach. We saw your work, we saw how you interacted with the singers. We just sensed that you could be a great vocal coach.”
そして彼はこう言ったのです。「ジャスティン、聞いて。僕たちは見つけたんだ。君には素晴らしいヴォーカルコーチになれる才能があると思う。君のやったことや、シンガーとの関わり方を見て、素晴らしいヴォーカルコーチになれる可能性を感じたんだ」
3. 秘めた可能性
And I thought, “A vocal coach… that’s the last thing I would want to do.” But because this guy saw this in me, somebody that knew what he was doing could see that potential in me. I... that day... went from pursuing my dreams to walking into my destiny. I found out what I was meant to do, what I was called to do in this life in a sort of miraculous way.
「ヴォーカルコーチか…。絶対にやりたくなかったんだけどな」そう思いましたが、この分野のプロが私の可能性に気づいたのですから、その日から私は、自分の夢を追いかけることから、運命の道へと歩いていくことに方向を変えることにしました。この人生でなすべきこと、天命を、奇跡的に見つけたのです。
And that’s why they say that things happen in A New York Minute. Because one day you can be expecting things to be going one way, and then, “BAM!”, walk right into your destiny.
ものごとは「ニューヨーク・ミニト* 」で起こる、と言われるのはこのことです。ある方向にものごとが進むと期待している時に、「バン！」と運命へ突き進むことになるのです。
*訳注：A New York Minute とは、一瞬、その瞬間のことです。
And so, I mean, that’s just a cool story. And the one that I’ll never forget. And it’s… you know, that’s why I’m doing what I’m doing today.
これは一生忘れられない、とっておきの話です。今やっていることを私がやっている理由は、まさしくこれなのです。
4. 学んだこと
But it really taught me a few things.
そして、このことから私はいくつかのことを学びました。
One is that you can say “Never say never.” Right? I mean, I said I would never be a voice teacher, never be a vocal coach. And now this is what I live for. I live to help as many people around the world learn how to sing as I possibly can in the time that I’m given in this life. That’s my purpose in life. And I said I would never do it. So I guess you can say “Never say never.”
一つは「『絶対』は無い」ということです。「絶対にヴォイスティーチャーやヴォーカルコーチにはならない！」と言っていたのに、今はそれで食べているのです。与えられた時間の中で、世界中のできるだけ多くの人たちが歌を学べるように応援するために生きているのです。それが私の人生の目的です。でも以前は「絶対にやらない！」と言っていたのですよ。だから「『絶対』は無い」と言えると思います。
The next thing is, if you’re going after your dreams, you will definitely end up finding your destiny.
次に言えるのは、夢を追いかけていれば、最終的に運命を見つけることになるということです。
So many times it’s just so easy to just give up on what we have in our hearts. You just say, “Oh, that can never happen. You know, I don’t have what it takes. All these people told me No.” You know, that’s why we always say, “Don’t let people tell you you can’t sing.”
心に秘めていることを諦めるのは簡単で、そういうことはたくさんあります。人は「絶対にうまくいかないよ。私には才能がないし。みんなやめろと言うんだ」と言いがちですが、だからこそ私たちはいつも、「『歌うな』とは誰にも言わせないで」と言っているのです。
And it’s not just singing. Anything that you have in your heart, you have to go after it. It’s not that it needs to work out exactly how you wanted to work out. But if you’re going after your dreams, either it’s going to work out just how you thought, or you’re going to go smacking into your destiny that you never thought, that’s going to use your talents and gifts.
歌のことだけではありません。あなたの心の中にあることは、追いかけなければなりません。あなたが思い描いていたようにことが運ばなくても良いのです。夢を追いかけてさえいれば、思い通りに行ったとしても、思いも寄らない運命にぶち当たったとしても、そこにあなたの才能を使うことになるでしょうから。
People are going to see - if you’re going after your dreams, if you’re bold enough to go after your dreams and tell people, “Take two headshots and call me when I’m right” - people are going to know that you have something. And they’re going to see the potential in you. And there’s no way you’re gonna miss out on your destiny.
夢を追いかけて、「ヘッドショットを2枚撮って、何かあったら電話して」と言えるくらい大胆になれれば、人々はあなたの資質に気付くことでしょう。そしてあなたの可能性が見つけられるのです。こうすれば自分の運命を逃してしまうことはないでしょう。
The next thing it showed me is that things happen in A New York Minute. How many singers have I seen… and artists, just struggling, struggling, working so hard - they wanna give up, you know, they get discouraged, they get frustrated.
次の教訓は、ものごとは「ニューヨーク・ミニト」で起こるということです。シンガーやアーティストがもがき、苦しみ、たゆまず努力をしているのに、諦めたくなったり、落ち込んだり、希望を失ったりしているのを、どれだけ見てきたことでしょうか。
And then in my time as a voice teacher, I have seen people who just thought “I will never make it. This will never happen for me.” BOOM! Then it happens. They finally get that breakthrough. They finally get what is was they were after.
私はヴォイスティーチャーとして、生徒が「もうダメだ、絶対にうまくいかない」と諦めかけていた時に「ブン！」と変化が起こるのを、何度も見てきました。ようやく彼らにブレイクスルーがやってきたのです。追いかけてきたものをつかむことができたのです。
And it happens when you least expected, and it happens fast. It happens in A New York Munite. So you cannot give up on yourself and things that you have inside you.
こういったことは一番期待していない時に、急に起こるものです。これが「ニューヨーク・ミニト」です。あなた自身のこと、心の中にあることを、決して諦めないでほしいと思います。
終わりに
So these are things, I guess, that my story in becoming a voice teacher has taught me. And so far our special episode 50 today, I just wanted to tell you guys about how I became a voice teacher and you know, again, we’re so grateful.
ということで、以上のことを私はヴォイスティーチャーになった経験から学びました。今回、50回目の特別編まで来たところで、ヴォイスティーチャーになった経緯と、感謝の気持ちを伝えたかったのです。
And we’re not going to stop. We’re going to just be with you guys and be helping you with this journey and we’re just thankful for every moment of it.

And so, don’t lose that joy. Don’t lose that passion. Don’t let people tell you you can’t sing because you and I both know it’s just not true.
